THE BASICS, MADE CLEAR

What is a chattel mortgage?

A chattel mortgage is a business loan secured against the vehicle or equipment you buy. You own the asset from the outset, while the lender holds security over it until the loan is repaid.

01

Choose your asset

Tell us what you are buying, its price and how your business will use it.

02

Explore the structure

Discuss the loan term, deposit, regular repayments and any proposed balloon with your broker.

03

Keep your business moving

If approved and the lender’s conditions are met, funding is arranged for your purchase.

The asset secures the loan. Lender conditions and any additional security or guarantees should be reviewed before you commit.

LOOK BEYOND THE MONTHLY PAYMENT

Regular repayments.
A clear plan for the finish.

NO BALLOON

Repay the loan through the term.

With no scheduled balloon, the loan is structured to be paid off through your regular repayments.

For an otherwise equivalent loan, regular payments are higher than with a balloon, but total interest is generally lower.

WITH A BALLOON

A final lump sum to plan for.

A balloon leaves an agreed amount payable at the end. It can reduce regular repayments but generally increases total interest for an otherwise equivalent loan.

Plan how you will pay that final amount. Refinancing requires a new assessment and is not guaranteed.

Compare the total amount payable, interest, fees and final balance—not just the regular repayment. Available structures depend on the lender and your circumstances.

BUSINESS ASSET FINANCE OPTIONS

Low doc or full doc.
Let’s explore your options.

Your broker can discuss the documentation pathway available for your business, purchase and lender.

LOW DOC

An alternative documentation pathway.

Some lenders offer low-doc business asset finance for eligible applicants, with fewer financial documents than their standard full-doc process.

  • Requirements vary with the lender and finance amount.
  • Trading history, credit profile and the asset still matter.
  • Supporting information may still be requested.
FULL DOC

A fuller picture of your business.

Full-doc finance uses supporting financial information to help the lender assess your business and ability to repay.

  • Documents may include financial statements, tax returns or bank statements.
  • Your broker explains the lender’s requirements.
  • Available terms depend on the lender’s assessment.

Low doc does not mean no assessment or guaranteed approval. Eligibility, documents, rates, fees and terms depend on the lender and your circumstances.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

A little clarity
before you commit.

Do I own the asset from the start?

Yes. Under a chattel mortgage you own the purchased asset from the outset, with the lender holding security over it while the loan is outstanding.

Is a chattel mortgage the same as a lease?

No. A chattel mortgage funds your purchase with a secured loan. A lease involves a different ownership arrangement. Your broker can explain the available products, and your accountant can advise on their treatment.

Can I discuss low-doc finance?

Yes. Some lenders offer a low-doc pathway for eligible business borrowers. Trading history, the asset and credit assessment still matter. We can discuss the requirements alongside full-doc options.

Can I buy a new or used asset?

Tell us the asset’s age, condition, seller and intended business use. Your broker can explore lenders’ requirements for the purchase you have in mind.

Should I include a balloon?

A balloon needs a plan for the final payment. Ask your broker to compare regular repayments, total interest and the final balance for available structures before you decide.

Can you explain the tax benefits?

Your accountant should confirm the tax treatment for your business. We can explain the finance structure and provide the loan information they need.

All finance is subject to lender assessment, eligibility and approval. Rates, fees and terms vary.
