Financing a Work Ute or Van When You’re Self-Employed: What You Need to Know
From finding the right vehicle to organising finance: a practical guide for business owners, before you pay a deposit.

Your work vehicle does more than get you from A to B. It carries your tools, gets you to your customers and helps keep your business moving.
Whether you’re buying your first van, replacing a tired ute or adding another vehicle to your team, getting the finance organised early can make the buying process easier.
Before you sign a purchase contract or pay a deposit, have a conversation with a finance professional. A little preparation can help you understand your budget, the lender’s requirements and your next steps.
Before you pay a deposit, talk finance
You’ve found the right vehicle. The price looks reasonable, and the seller says someone else is interested. It can be tempting to put money down straight away.
But finding a vehicle and securing suitable finance are two separate steps. Speaking with your broker first can help you understand:
- A realistic purchase budget and repayment range.
- Whether the vehicle and seller are likely to meet lender requirements.
- What paperwork you may need.
- How a deposit, loan term or balloon payment could affect your cashflow.
- Whether conditional pre-approval is available.
Don’t assume a deposit is refundable if your finance doesn’t proceed. Before committing, understand the written deposit and cancellation conditions, and whether an appropriate finance condition is included in the purchase contract. Requirements and protections vary by location and transaction. Consumer Affairs Victoria explains contracts and deposits here.
Conditional pre-approval can help guide your search, but it is not a guarantee of final approval. The lender may still need to assess the vehicle, verify information and satisfy other conditions.
We can help you find the vehicle, too
You don’t need to have a ute or van picked out before contacting HFG.
Through our established dealer and industry network, we can help you explore available vehicles and assist with the buying process alongside your finance application.
Tell us what you need the vehicle to do, your preferred budget and your timing. We can help connect you with relevant contacts and coordinate the steps between choosing a vehicle and arranging finance.
Already found one? We can work with you and your chosen seller, subject to the lender’s requirements.
The earlier you involve us, the more opportunity we have to help before you commit.
Low doc or full doc: which option could suit?
Being self-employed doesn’t mean every application follows the same path. Your business history, available records, credit profile and proposed purchase all matter.
Low doc finance
Low doc options may suit eligible business owners who don’t have a full set of current financial statements ready.
Depending on the lender, assessment may involve alternative information such as bank statements, business details or an income declaration. “Low doc” does not mean no checks or automatic approval. Liberty’s low doc vehicle finance information provides one example of this lending approach.
The benefit is potentially less paperwork. The trade-off is that eligibility, pricing, deposits and borrowing limits can differ between lenders and applicants.
Full doc finance
Full doc applications generally involve more detailed evidence of your financial position, such as financial statements, tax returns and other supporting records.
If those records are available, they can help a lender understand how your business operates and what it can afford.
The right approach depends on your circumstances. Your broker can explain the documentation pathways available rather than assuming low doc is always the easiest or best option.

Buying new or used?
Start with what your business needs: payload, towing capacity, cargo space, reliability and running costs.
Then discuss the proposed vehicle with your broker. A vehicle’s age, kilometres, condition and purchase price can influence the lenders and terms available. Private sales may also require additional checks.
A cheaper purchase price is only part of the picture. Consider maintenance, downtime, insurance and any fit-out needed before the vehicle can start earning its keep.
Look beyond the repayment
A repayment needs to fit your cashflow, but it shouldn’t be the only figure you compare.
Check the interest rate, fees, loan term, total amount payable and any final balloon payment. A longer term may reduce regular repayments while increasing the total interest paid. Moneysmart explains the main costs to compare when considering vehicle finance.
A deposit can reduce the amount you borrow, but it also uses cash your business might need for wages, stock or operating expenses. Discuss both sides with your broker.
What about a balloon payment?
A balloon leaves an agreed lump sum payable at the end of the loan. It can reduce regular repayments, but you need a realistic plan for that final amount, and it can increase total interest.
Don’t assume the vehicle’s future sale price will cover the balloon or that refinancing will automatically be available.

Could a chattel mortgage be suitable?
A chattel mortgage is one structure commonly used to finance business vehicles. You own the vehicle, while the lender takes security over it until the loan is repaid. If repayments are not met, the vehicle may be at risk.
Your broker can explain how the finance works. Your accountant can advise on ownership, business use, GST and the tax treatment relevant to your circumstances.

What should you have ready?
You don’t need every document prepared to start a conversation. It helps to know:
- Your ABN and how long you’ve been trading.
- What vehicle you need and how it will be used.
- Your approximate budget and preferred timing.
- Whether you’re replacing a vehicle or adding to your fleet.
- What financial records you have available.
- Any existing finance, trade-in or proposed deposit.
Your broker will explain what is needed for your application and how to provide documents securely.
